Nutrition Is Less Confusing Than You Think

 Tl;dr

Despite the differences between popular diets, there are some consistent principles of healthy eating:

  • Eat mostly whole foods
  • Make plant-based and high-fibre foods a major part of your diet
  • Avoid ultra-processed foods
  • Choose water as your primary beverage
  • Incorporate movement & exercise

These aren't necessarily new ideas or diet trends. They're principles that have remained broadly consistent for decades and continue to be supported by modern nutrition research.

With so much conflicting nutrition advice, it can be difficult to know what you should actually eat. One diet tells you to cut carbs, another tells you to eat more fat, while the next promises that a completely different approach is the answer.

But step back from the diet debates and something interesting emerges - many different approaches to healthy eating actually agree on some fundamental principles.

So, what do different diets actually agree on?

Nutrition can sometimes feel like an argument about which diet is best. But rather than looking at the differences between diets, it can be useful to look at where they overlap.

You don't necessarily need to follow a particular named diet to eat well. Instead, there are some straightforward principles that can form the foundation of a healthy diet, whatever your individual preferences.

The first is perhaps the simplest - eat food that is as close to its natural state as possible.

Why are whole foods important?

Think about the foods you'd recognise immediately in their original form: an apple, a potato, broccoli, chickpeas or an egg. These are whole foods, rather than foods that have been extensively altered or formulated.

The idea isn't that every meal has to be perfectly “clean” or that you can never eat anything processed. It's about making foods that are recognisably food the foundation of your diet.

That gives you a simple question to ask when choosing what to eat:

How close is this food to the way it occurs naturally?

The more often the answer is “quite close”, the more your diet is likely to be built around whole foods rather than products.

Does healthy eating mean eating mostly plants?

Another common idea is the importance of plant-based foods.

That means making foods such as fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and other high-fibre plant foods a significant part of your diet.

Importantly, “mostly plant-based” doesn't automatically mean vegan or vegetarian. Animal foods can still have a place in a healthy diet. The point is about the overall balance of the diet and giving plant foods a prominent role.

Again, this doesn't need to become complicated.

Just think about whether your everyday diet contains plenty of these elements. Rather than following a rigid set of rules, you're building a pattern of eating around foods that provide plenty of nutritional value.

Why does food processing matter?

This brings us to another principle that appears repeatedly in discussions about healthy eating - minimal processing.

Processing isn't automatically bad. Many foods are processed in some way, and processing can be useful for cooking, preserving or preparing food.

The bigger distinction is between foods that have undergone relatively little processing and ultra-processed foods that have been substantially changed from their original form.

So the goal isn't to become obsessed with whether a food has technically been “processed”.

Instead, look at the overall pattern of your diet.

If most of what you're eating is recognisable whole or minimally processed food, there is naturally less room for ultra-processed products to dominate your diet.

What should you drink every day?

When it comes to choosing a drink, there is one particularly simple answer - water.

Water should be your primary beverage.

Coffee and other drinks can have their place, but water is the straightforward foundation. You don't need to look for a fashionable drink, special ingredient or complicated hydration strategy.

Sometimes the simplest nutritional advice is also the easiest to follow.

Make water your default drink.

Why should you avoid ultra-processed foods?

If whole foods, plant-based foods and minimal processing are three of the common themes, the flip side is reducing your intake of ultra-processed foods.

These foods can be very easy to consume regularly because they're designed to be convenient and appealing. But building your diet around them moves you further away from the basic principles we've already covered.

Rather than thinking about this as an all-or-nothing rule, consider what happens when you change the balance of your diet.

More whole foods.

More plants.

Less highly processed food.

Water as your main drink.

Those simple changes can provide a much clearer starting point than jumping from one diet trend to another.

Is there really a “perfect” diet?

Probably the most useful takeaway is that healthy eating doesn't necessarily require you to identify the one perfect diet.

Different people have different preferences, routines and nutritional requirements. Diets can also differ considerably in the foods they include and exclude.

But underneath those differences, there is considerable common ground.

You can step away from the arguments about whether one particular diet is superior and instead focus on the principles that keep appearing:

  1. Choose whole foods
  2. Make plant-based foods a major part of your diet
  3. Minimise ultra-processed foods
  4. Drink water as your primary beverage

And remember - nutrition doesn't exist in isolation. Your overall lifestyle matters too. Regular exercise and physical activity are another key part of a healthy lifestyle.

And if you have certain medical conditions, this may alter the advice above. So please always check with your doctor or a relevant medical professional to ensure you’re making the healthiest choices for your own personal circumstances.
